2017 Superhero Movies Ranked from Worst to Best

Comic Book Movies

2017 was one of the best years for superhero movies ever.  We got six great movies, some of which will go down as some of the best superhero movies of all-time. Let’s look back at last year with a ranking of the 2017 superhero movies!

#7: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy was incredibly surprising.  James Gunn took a C-list Marvel comic and made a crazy, funny, and immensely entertaining comic book movie.  Vol. 2 was a great sequel.  The returning characters were just as fun as you remember, and a few new characters were also added. There are a lot more jokes in this sequel, and sometimes they bogged down the story. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a solid movie, but slightly disappointing in comparison to the first film.

Although it’s ranked as the worst of the 2017 superhero movies, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to behold.

#6: Justice League

DC had a tough act to follow in Wonder Woman and had to start a streak of good films.  Justice League ended up being a fun representation of some of DC’s most iconic heroes.  The characters sell this movie with returning heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman, and newcomers like Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg. They were all unique, and I can’t wait to see their solo films.  While the villain and CGI were lackluster, the dialogue between the characters and the fun action scenes make Justice League a very enjoyable movie.

#5: The LEGO Batman Movie

Much can go wrong when taking a side character from a successful movie and giving him a solo film.  However, when that character happens to be one of the most popular comic book heroes of all-time, that can make a great movie like The LEGO Batman Movie.  In its own silly way, this movie gives great insight into the psyche of Batman.  They explore the idea that Batman is lonely in life, and when he adopts a child he has to learn how to be part of a family.  There are some smart references to previous Batman comics and movies that are great nods to fans.

The LEGO Batman Movie is a hilarious take on Batman that is a kids movie on the surface, but also a great character study underneath.

#4: Wonder Woman

DC had two critical flops on their hands with Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, so Wonder Woman had to change the narrative and get fans excited about DC again.  DC did not only that but made one of the most culturally impactful movies of recent memory.  Gal Gadot is a powerful force as Wonder Woman and an inspiring icon as well.  Patty Jenkins’s directing created a magnetic world which is showed in particular on Themiscyra.

The third act of the movie brings it down significantly, but the first two acts and the fact that a female superhero could be featured on screen in a leading role save the movie.  Wonder Woman was a delightful movie with exciting action that will go down in history as one of the most important movies ever made.

#3: Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the best Spider-Man movie since 2004.  Tom Holland was one of the best parts of Captain America: Civil War, and he showed that he could carry his own movie while proving himself to be arguably the best incarnation of Spider-Man of all time.  Marvel put more focus on the high school aspect of Peter’s life, which is a major part of the comics.  This made him feel much younger, creating another element to his character that hasn’t had an emphasis in the past movies.

The movie also has some great side characters.  Peter’s best friend Ned is hilarious, Tony Stark plays a father figure to Peter, and Michael Keaton is one of the best Marvel villains yet as Vulture.  Spider-Man: Homecoming is a fun Spider-Man movie (and one of the better 2017 superhero movies), and an incredible return to form for the character.

#2: Thor: Ragnarok

The Thor movies up to this point have been decent at best, but Taika Waititi brought an incredible amount of fun energy to the third film in the franchise.  This is one of the most enjoyable experiences in the theater in 2017.  The movie is hilariously packed with jokes from beginning to end, with some amazing action in between, especially the Hulk vs. Thor arena sequence.  New characters like Valkyrie, Hela, and Korg (the obvious standout) were truly amazing.  Thor: Ragnarok is one of the craziest, funniest movies in the MCU.

#1: Logan

Logan isn’t exactly a “superhero movie” — it’s a western with emotional, dramatic elements.  It’s a character piece about Logan, and the end of his journey we’ve been watching for seventeen years.  Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart deserve Oscar nominations for their work in this transcendent comic book movie.  This film shows that you can tell a real, grounded human story with characters that come from comic books. James Mangold wrote a story that made an indestructible person seem vulnerable and human.

Logan is not only the best of the 2017 superhero movies, but one of the best 2017 movies.

I disagree with you on multiple levels. Here’s what I say (Logan is off my list because I didn’t see it):
Wonder Woman
Justice League
Thor: Ragnarok
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Lego Batman tied for 2nd because they were equally good.
Spider-Man Homecoming is #1.

While I disagree with Guardians of the Galaxy being the worst, (I actually laughed out loud at the movies), Logan was awesome! Patrick Stewart was hilarious ? And what’s not to love about Hugh Jackman ??

A lot of people disagreed with Guardians 2, Justice League just worked a little bit more for me. I wouldn’t describe Patrick Stewart’s performance as hilarious, but he and Hugh Jackman were great! Glad you enjoyed!

Your welcome! Definitely, watch the X-Men movies before Logan if you want the full effect, but it still works on its own.

I 100% agree with this. I would not have put it any differently.

Goodness, I was surprised to see Guardians 2 ranked so low. I’m curious, what about it didn’t work for you?

I actually liked Guardians 2, I had it so low because it didn’t work as well as the first one for me. It focused too much on jokes in the first two acts, and that made some of the characters feel different from the first movie. Don’t get me wrong, I actually liked it. However, looking back on it, the other movies had more of an effect on me. Thanks for your question!

For me, Ragnarok’s sense of fun put it at the top, closely followed by Logan. Same reasoning would probably put Guardians 2 third or fourth. JL was easily the worst, for me!

Ragnarok’s fun is why it’s at number 2 for me, but personally I thought Logan’s mature story put it on top. I really like your ranking!

I love your list. I liked all of those movies, and agree about Logan being the best of the year. It is one of my favorite all time superhero movies now.

After thinking about it, I decided that Logan is my 2nd favorite superhero movie of all time behind The Dark Knight. That could change, but that’s how I feel for now. This year was great for superhero movies! Thanks for the nice comment!

Interesting! A lot of people have Wonder Woman as their number one, it was really impactful this year. Thanks!

The only 2 movies that I missed last year were Justice League and aThe LEGO Batman movie, but otherwise I have seen them all.
Could not agree more with your number 1 choice. As much as I would love to see both Patrick and Hugh receive an Oscar nomination, I pretty much doubt that will happen. Superhero movies always get overlooked, but who knows maybe we wil; get a big surprise this year. Great post! ?

Logan was actually my favorite movie of the year as well! I also hope they get nominations, Stewart has a better chance than Jackman, but they both deserve noms. Thanks for the nice comment!

Very well written. I personally didn’t enjoy Justice league. I felt it could have been better, so it deserved #7.

I personally enjoyed it because I thought the heroes were great, but I totally understand why it didn’t resonate with many fans. Thanks!

I thought Wonder Woman deserved the second place, I was not impressed by Thor: Ragnarok but still, nice list!!

Wonder Woman was amazing! It was fought to choose between it and Homecoming, they’re pretty interchangeable for me. Personally, I thought Thor: Ragnarok was extremely different from other MCU movies, so it deserved credit. Thanks for the kind words!

Great list Trey! Personally, I would’ve gone with the following:

#7. Justice League
#6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
#5. Wonder Woman
#4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
#3. The Lego Batman Movie
#2. Thor: Ragnarok
#1. Logan

At least our #1 is the same!
