Top 10 Survival Predictions for Infinity War and Avengers 4

by Cammy Madden
Infinity War

With Infinity War on the horizon, it’s natural for fans to wonder just how much of a threat Thanos is going to be. It’s all well and good to assume he’ll be the most difficult challenge any of the team will ever face…but just how dangerous will Thanos be in comparison to previous villains such as Loki or Ultron? So far in the MCU only one main character has died (without returning). Even then, I’m not sure that Quicksilver dying in Age of Ultron really counts seeing as his total time as an Avenger was about 15 minutes! So who will survive beyond Avengers 4 and who won’t? Let’s find out as we count down our top 10 MCU character survival predictions!

As a note, this list is not based on actor contracts or who has/hasn’t been confirmed for either of the upcoming films.

Tony Stark (Iron Man)

Infinity War

Tony Stark A.K.A Iron Man represents the start of the path which the MCU has continued to build upon. Way back in May 2008, we got to see the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” create the Iron Man suit in order to escape the Ten Rings terrorist group. From that point onward, we’ve been witness to the growth of the character. From a spoiled, anti-government hothead to an Avenging, self-sacrificing mentor, his character appears to have completed its arc. So what does this mean for the survival chances of Tony Stark?

I think that Infinity War or Avengers 4 would be a fitting end to the tale of Tony Stark. Considering everything he has faced so far, it would truly reflect the power of Thanos if Stark was to fall. However, given his role in Spiderman: Homecoming and as he is seemingly the only source of income for the Avengers team, it seems likely that Tony Stark will survive into phase 4 of the MCU. Whether there will ever be an Iron Man 4 is a debatable topic but I don’t see it as likely that he’ll perish in the upcoming films.

Prediction: Survive

Steve Rodgers (Captain America)

Infinity War

Steve Rodgers has an arc that runs in the opposite direction to that of Tony Stark. Having started off as a skinny army reject, he quickly became ‘The First Avenger’. Under the mantle of Captain America, he was essentially the weapon of the US military and ultimately of SHIELD. The Winter Soldier marked a turning point for the character of Steve Rodgers: Coming to realize that all groups have an agenda and will do anything to stop those opposed to it, no matter what the cost. Civil War marked the final step in his character arc with him becoming an outlaw.

We’ll see the character come out from the shadows in Infinity War and most likely Avengers 4. By the end of the latter we may see a new character taking up the mantle of Captain America. Currently, this is most likely to be Bucky A.K.A The Winter Soldier and best friend to Steve Rodgers. Steve will most likely make it through Infinity War. But surviving Avengers 4 and into phase 4 seems incredibly unlikely.

Prediction: Die (most likely in Avengers 4)

Thor

Infinity War

The mighty God of Thunder and Son of Odin (much like the previous two characters) has gone through his entire character arc. Having started off as the heir to the throne of Asgard and with a hunger for war, Thor has lost a lot along the way. He’s believed his brother to die twice, his mother died, his father died (to him twice) and almost all of his Asgardian friends are dead at the hands of his sister. He’s had to face the fact that everything he learned growing up was a lie. Yet through all this, he has become a defender of Earth and seems to now be the ruler of the surviving Asgardians.

On the one hand, it seems incredibly fitting that Thor should survive into phase 4. We see him in the trailer forging a new weapon to replace Mjölnir. He also has an eye-patch like his father did and is leading the people of Asgard. But…on the other hand, Asgard is gone, most of his people are gone, in terms of character development it just seems like Thor’s story needs a conclusion. So while it could arguably go either way, I’m going to have to place Thor on the death side of these predictions. This makes more sense when we look at the next character.

Survival Prediction: Die (most likely in Avengers 4)

Loki

Infinity War

Loki: adoptive brother of Thor and the God of mischief. He’s certainly taken on a role that exceeds his title. Having battled Thor and the Asgardians, he set his sights on Earth. Forming an alliance with the Chitauri (and Thanos) and with use of not one but two infinity stones, Loki lost to the Avengers in the first Avengers film. Being one of the greatest villains so far in the MCU, Loki has started to lean towards the side of good (at least when it benefits him). In Thor: The Dark World, the two brothers temporarily teamed up to get revenge on Malekith for murdering their mother. This went a step further in Thor: Ragnarok when Loki returns to save his brother.

There is much speculation as to the role he will play in Infinity War. We see him in the trailer holding the tesseract and many believe he betrays Thor in favor of Thanos. Whether this is true or not, I think the survival odds for the mischievous God are slim. In fact, I think there are two possible ways he will die: 1) He will die saving Thor (for real this time) or 2) Thor will lose to Thanos and in order to avenge him Loki will sacrifice himself. So sadly, I don’t see either of the brothers surviving to the end of Avengers 4 but whether Thor survives or not, I feel like Loki is doomed!

Prediction: Die (in either of the films)

Hulk/Bruce Banner

Infinity War

While the story of Bruce Banner is well-known, the MCU hasn’t given us much exploration of the character. Considering The Incredible Hulk came out just after Iron Man in 2008 (with Tony Stark appearing in a post-credits scene to further hint at the Avengers Initiative) there hasn’t been a great deal of exploration of Bruce and his short-tempered alter-ego. In the first Avengers film we see that Bruce simply wants to help where he can, without letting “the big guy” break free. Then in Age of Ultron we explore his apparent relationship with Black Widow. In Thor: Ragnarok we learn that Bruce and the Hulk seem to be battling for control…with Bruce losing.

So it’s safe to say that there is still some ground to cover with the development of both Bruce and the Hulk. I mean we’ve seen just how powerful Hulk actually is, particularly in Thor: Ragnarok. So I don’t think we’ll see him fall in Avengers 3 or 4. He may get knocked down but one thing we know all too well about the Hulk is, he always going to get up again. However, while it’s also unlikely, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him and Natalie (Black Widow) finally escaping to pursue their romance….provided she survives.

Prediction: Survive

Hawkeye (Clint Barton)

Infinity War

image via Digital Spy

Hawkeye is a somewhat difficult character to predict in terms of survival odds. We first saw him appear in Thor as one of Shield’s agents. Since then, we had his personal life shoved down our throats in Age of Ultron, something I feel we could have lived without. I for one would much rather Hawkeye had died than Quicksilver but that’s neither here nor there. Clint seems to be repeatedly encountering stronger adversaries and it sort of seems like he’s a simple soldier rather than being at the same level of the rest of the team. He’s out of his depth, is what I am saying. As such, I can’t see much of a place for him in phase 4. I mean, even in Civil War it felt like people were going easy on him.

We all realize that the stakes are going to be high in Infinity War and Avengers 4. As such, there are undoubtedly going to be sacrifices. Is it crazy of me to think that Hawkeye might be one of the first to go? I mean it’s the perfect time to cut any unwanted characters and I’m not sure many people want to keep seeing him appear in the films. The only reason he might survive is because of his family. I’m not saying they are going to turn up and save his life…but having introduced his pregnant wife and children, he may have Disney armor. By that, I mean that Disney is a family-oriented company and would rather avoid the family man being destroyed by a practically all-powerful alien. Let’s put it this way: I will find it disappointing if he makes it through both films!

Prediction: Die (Infinity War)

Black Widow (Natasha Romanova)

Infinity War

Black Widow is another character who has perhaps reached the end of the line. We first met her in Iron Man 2 as one of Fury’s agents. She may have started off such, tasked with keeping Stark on track but she has stepped up her game since then. She’s outsmarted Loki, taken on Hydra and the Winter Soldier, fought the many variations of Ultron and battled the Hulk (through weird phrases). However, judging from the trailer, it seems that Black Widow may have little to offer in the battle against Thanos. As I mentioned in the Hulk section, if she doesn’t die then I don’t think she’ll hang around.

Prediction: Die (probably in Avengers 4)

Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

Infinity War

image via Nerdist

This answer is a bit of a cop-out. We’ve seen many variations of Spider-Man but we first met this Spider-Man (within the MCU) in Civil War. The web-slinger got his own welcome back to the universe in the form of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Many fans were worried that a younger Spider-Man might not fit into the MCU with all the older characters but I for one was pleasantly surprised. Tom Holland managed to portray a smart, witty and ultimately friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. We already know that there is going to be a Spider-Man sequel. There are also rumors of him appearing in the upcoming Venom movie with Tom Hardy which isn’t going to be part of the MCU. As such, it seems practically impossible that Peter Parker won’t make it out the other side and into phase 4.

Prediction: Survive

Vision

Infinity War

image via IB Times UK

Vision is sort of like the child of Tony Stark and Ultron. I’m going to come straight out and say it. I don’t think Vision is making it through Infinity War, never mind Avengers 4. The character is a product of the mind stone, one of the six infinity stones. This same stone birthed Ultron and was part of Loki’s scepter. We already know that Thanos will obtain all of the infinity stones before the end of Infinity War which does not bode well for Vision. Granted, we’re not entirely sure how the stone works, even he mentions that in Civil War. So it is completely possible that Vision may survive just without his powers, becoming more akin to a mortal man.

However, there is another reason why he is probably going to die. Vision is overpowered. When we watch him take part in the airport battle during Civil War, he flies through Ant-Man like some sort of ghost. He can fire hugely concentrated beams of energy from his forehead as well. Maybe it’s just my opinion but I don’t think he fits in with the rest of the team. I also think (based on the trailer) that the relationship between Vision and Scarlett Witch will lead to her losing yet another person she cares about. This will motivate her and boost her powers in the same way that happened in Age of Ultron after her brother died.

Prediction: Die (Infinity War)

T’Challa (Black Panther)

Infinity War

Similarly to Spider-Man, this one is a bit of an obvious one. There are so many reasons why Black Panther will absolutely, definitely survive. For starters, we’ve only just been introduced to the character and the mysterious world of Wakanda. I think the way he was introduced in Civil War was very well done as it gave us a sort of origin story without following the more clichéd approach. It also allowed us to jump straight into action scenes during his solo film. Black Panther was an incredible success so even if we didn’t know a sequel was in the works, we could safely assume it would be on the way. As such, it’s a very safe bet that T’Challa is going to make it through to stage 4 as the Black Panther.

A back story on Thanos was cut from the movie according to Russo brothers. All the same, I personally think it should have been included… I dont mind watching a 3 hour + Avengers movie😎

Interesting predictions, Cammy! Out of all the possibilities you mentioned, I agree with you most about Steve Rogers/Captain America. Ever since Captain America: The Winter Soldier (some could even argue ever since Captain America: The First Avenger), there have been subtle hints about the possibility of Bucky becoming the next Captain America. These possibilities have been adding up, especially after the release of Black Panther.

Agreed! There were several moments in both films where he held the shield and everything seemed to be put on hold momentarily as if they were intentionally allowing time for the audience to soak the image up. Plus, in Civil War whenever they both find Tony, there are some nods to it as well.

I don’t care about Vision, Hawkeye, or this version of Scarlet Witch’s lives, so I’m hoping all three of them will be killed off.

I’m interested to see how powerful Scarlet Witches powers can become but I couldn’t agree more about Hawkeye and Vision! This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of them!

Hawkeye and Vision really add nothing to the storyline. I just couldn’t believe Pietro was killed off like that in Age of Ultron. How was Quicksilver unable to dodge that bullet? ? Made no sense to me.

I know, right? I’d much rather Hawkeye had died in Age of Ultron. My hope is that in Avengers 4, timelines get messed up by the Infinity Gauntlet and that moment gets altered so that Quicksilver is still alive and Hawkeye is dead. Probably not likely but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
