Here at MovieBabble, we like to watch movies, obviously. However, the Coronavirus has created a sudden drop off in the number of new movies for us to watch. But we will not be stopped, and we’ve turned to the many decades of cinema preceding us for our entertainment. Some of us have gotten into familiar favorites, others have chosen to dive headfirst into the artsiest of artsy movies, and the rest of us are somewhere in between. For the duration of this crisis, we will be keeping you in the know about these quality gems through our Quarantine Staff Picks. So, without further ado, here are some of the movies we’d recommend for your viewing pleasure this week.
12 Angry Men (1957)
Ashvin Sivakumar: Essentially a film about how we feel being stuck in quarantine… (Available to rent on VOD.)
Monos (2019)
Nick Kush: Monos was one of my favorite movies of 2019. It borrows quite a bit from Apocalypse Now and Lord of the Flies, following a child’s militia in Colombia as they become unhinged in an increasingly hostile situation. But even from the beginning, it’s clear most of the child soldiers have been reduced to their most animalistic tendencies, displaying strong sexual or frenzied characteristics that are downright upsetting but also entirely engaging. Monos is a daring view into the decline of humanity, thanks in large part to what I contend is the best score of the past year. (Available to stream on Hulu.)
The Hobbit (1977)
Collin Willis: Though it’s not a perfect adaptation of Tolkien’s novel, the streamlined plot and lack of fluff of The Hobbit Trilogy make this the definitive big-screen adaptation. It’s got grand cartoon visuals, some folksy original songs, and a Gollum that looks like Littlefoot from The Land Before Time. A well-spent hour and a half. Although, for some reason, all of the other major villains look like cats… (Available to stream on HBO Max.)
Coherence (2013)
Cammy Madden: A trippy movie about multiple realities that has an attention to detail like no other! If you enjoy movies that mess with your mind, I suggest you ship the trailer and dive right in. (Available to stream on Prime Video, Hulu, Vudu, Tubi, and Crackle.)
Chimères (2013)
Ingrid Dendievel: It’s not every day that you can see a horror movie from Switzerland. After a car accident in Romania, the main character receives a blood transfusion. When he is back home, though, bizarre things start to happen to him… (Available to stream on Tubi.)
