We often turn to film to capture those feelings that we have trouble articulating ourselves, to express something personal to us without going through the highs and lows of it in our own lives. However, when a film (or films) can take us on that journey full of empathy, where by the end we’ve undergone the same emotional range as the characters, we can’t help but feel like we were walking alongside them in that experience. Very few films can accomplish this feat, but when they do, it’s truly a marvel. And when it comes to capturing the feeling of love and belonging, few films have done it better than Richard Linklater’s The Before Trilogy.
Comprising of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight, The Before Trilogy is arguably one of the best movie trilogies ever assembled. For Linklater, a director that has made some truly iconic films, all three films rank among his best.
