‘Youth’ by Farida Zahran

by The MovieBabble Staff

A teenage girl takes a step toward adulthood in contemporary Cairo.

Nick Kush: Farida Zahran shows plenty of restraint in telling this coming-of-age story; in the wrong hands, Youth could turn into a needlessly brutal short, but she wisely steps back and focuses on more mundane scenarios and the quiet distress of the unnamed main character. Seeing this young woman quietly struggle with societal expectations and setting boundaries is very moving and poignant.
