Independent film is quite unique around the world. Smaller distribution companies such as A24 have paved the way for other small distributors to release features that eventually contend for many awards — including Best Picture. In fact, 2017’s winner, Moonlight, was a famously cheap movie — the cheapest in the history of Academy Awards to win the most prestigious award, in fact. The film industry is allowing such films to thrive with this new model, and Wildcard Distribution’s Michael Inside is a great example of such a scenario.
Michael Inside went on to dominate the Irish Film and Television Awards, getting nominated in categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Script, and Best Actor in a Leading Role and would even go on to win for Best Film. The praise cemented the film as one to watch out for, leading to a theatrical release this year.
