Part of the general movie conversation these days is the necessity of remakes. More specifically, if American versions of foreign films are worthwhile. Most of the time, it’s for a studio or a creative team to take advantage of a great story and script without much retooling, but, most of the time, it’s to make a quick buck. But Netflix’s The Kindergarten Teacher — the U.S. version of the Israeli film of the same name — shockingly adds its own take to the story, showing that sometimes it’s effective to tell the same story within a different context.

Forty years old, stuck in Staten Island and married to a sweet but oblivious husband with kids that largely ignore her, Lisa Spinelli (Gyllenhaal) spends her days teaching Kindergarten with growing numbness. Her one reprieve is a nighttime poetry class across the bay in Lower Manhattan. When she discovers that a five-year-old in her class may be a poetic prodigy, Lisa becomes fascinated — then obsessed, as she struggles to protect him from neglectful parents and a plagiarizing babysitter. She soon finds herself risking her career, family and freedom to nurture his artistic promise.
