Ode to Desolation shares the story of Jim Henterly, a naturalist, illustrator, and fire lookout as he
contemplates the dwindling days of Fire Lookouts in North America.
With the influence of technology and AI threatening to make his role obsolete, we look into the
future and ask ourselves what connections we will maintain to keep our human interpretation of
the natural world alive.
Nick Kush: The most devastating piece of Lindsey Hagen’s Ode to Desolation is seeing the quiet pain on Jim Henterly’s face as he comes to grips with the fact that, eventually, he will no longer be able to do what has shaped his entire worldview, and for reasons entirely out of his control. You get the sense he’s been bracing for the day he’ll no longer work at Desolation Peak for quite a while. The stunning scenery and beautiful score only add to this heartbreaking series of observations and stories.
