‘Frank’s Joke’ by Ed Bulmer

Frank told a joke at work. Nobody laughed. Now at 3 am he’s unable to sleep as he obsesses over his social faux-pas, leading him to contemplate the nature of memory itself.

Nick Kush: We’ve all been there. You tee yourself up perfectly to enter a conversation, drop a hilarious line, and immediately ingratiate yourself with everyone in the group. Until you stumble over your words and fail miserably. You later question everything. Why couldn’t I say something better? Does everyone hate me? WHY AM I SO WEIRD? And then, it’s fine. It was the entire time, actually. Frank’s Joke is a wonderfully goofy and puppet-filled take on the mind’s tendency to jump to the worst-case scenario in the smallest scenarios, and a pleasant reminder that everything is going to be okay.
