Film Review – The After Party (2018)

by Nick Kush
The After Party

Is it me or are there not enough good rap movies these days? Everyone always goes back to 8 Mile or Straight Outta Compton as the rap movies they love (and that’s it), but if you ask, it’s time that we get another awesome movie that makes everyone sprint over to Spotify and download the entire soundtrack. My guess is that Netflix sensed this void after purchasing The After Party — it’s just too bad it’s not a better film.

The following review will be spoiler free.

Directed By: Ian Edelman

Written By: Ian Edelman

Starring: Kyle Harvey, Harrison Holzer, Shelley Hennig, and Teyana Taylor

When an aspiring rapper goes viral for all the wrong reasons, he thinks his career is over. But when his best friend gets them into a wild NYC after party, he gets one more chance to make the impossible happen.

I disagree with your opinion because I think the film form was purposed to support an overarching social commentary on hip hop today. We’re comparing this rap movie partially in the frame of other rap movies that occur in other times and places (i. e. the 90’s and the ‘hood). I think The After Party shows hip hop is a commercialized genre in the 21st century.
