The Shape of Water

The 90th Academy Awards have come and gone and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water was awarded as the best movie of the year by the Academy of Arts and Sciences.  However, the award was met with some backlash with many claiming that the movie is “obvious” or “simple.”

However, as Richard Keaney explains in his review of the film below, The Shape of Water has a lot going for it that make it worthy of Best Picture.  Naturally, any debate such as this one is open to personal opinion, but there’s no doubt that Del Toro and Co. put a lot into this film that is much more than meets the eye.

To dive further into The Shape of Water, check out Richard Keaney’s spoiler-filled review of the film in the video below:

I personally liked the Shape of Water. It is well directed with nice style and excellent performances. The reason why I would not have chose it as best picture is because it is a very conventional Oscar baited film. The type that always gets recognized. I also don’t think it had as much impact as other films that were nominated.

Also I would like the Academy to start releasing the votes and the voters for better clarification on what they look for in choosing the winners in each category.

Great write up!

I would counter that with the fact that this movie is literally a fish-sex film — we don’t see films like that get nominated (even if they cover familiar themes) very often!

Was The Shape of Water your choice?

I would have gone with either Lady Bird or Phantom Thread, but I’m not mad that The Shape of Water won!
