Here’s a new weekly article from MovieBabble, the weekend box office report! With Spider-Man: Homecoming released this past weekend, there’s no doubt that there would be a new number one this week. But how does the rest of the top five stack up? Below are the reported estimates via Box Office Mojo for the July 7th box office report:
#5: Transformers: The Last Knight – $6.30 Million
Transformers: The Last Knight experienced another +60% drop at the box office but still managed to near closer to $500 million worldwide. However, the fifth installment in the Transformers franchise remains by far the lowest grossing film in the saga. For perspective, 2007’s Transformers, the second lowest performing movie in the franchise, grossed a tad over $700 million worldwide. To make matters worse for Paramount Pictures, the domestic gross for the film is less than half of Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s total when it was released in 2014.
It’s clear from the numbers that fatigue is setting in for the franchise. Whether or not Paramount makes changes with its most profitable franchise remains to be seen. However, Michael Bay has claimed in countless interviews that this was his final movie in the franchise, which may force the studio’s hand in making alterations.
#4: Wonder Woman – $10.14 Million
Wonder Woman continues to be a force at the box office. It’s already the highest grossing DCEU film in domestic numbers, surpassing Batman V Superman in prior weeks. This past weekend saw the film pass Suicide Squad in terms of international gross, making it the second highest ranked film in the cinematic universe overall.
As of now, Wonder Woman now stands as the fourth highest grossing film of the year in terms of international box office, surpassing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales this week. Only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Fate of the Furious, and Beauty and the Beast have outperformed Wonder Woman this year.
#3: Baby Driver – $12.75 Million
Baby Driver‘s performance in its second week may be the biggest bright spot for the July 7th box office report. Dropping by a mere 38% in its second weekend, the film looks primed to become Edgar Wright‘s highest performing movie in terms of international gross.
Every time an original film does well at the box office, it’s due for some applause. In a time full of sequels, reboots, soft reboots, and universes, it’s nice to see an original film stand out in the crowd.
It has already made its budget back and then some, prompting executives to approach Edgar Wright about making a sequel.
I guess I need to retract my previous statement…
#2: Despicable Me 3 – $34 Million
The top two in the July 7th box office aren’t very surprising.
Despicable Me 3 continues to rake in money. However, it is performing well below Universal Pictures’ expectations. In comparison to Despicable Me 2, Despicable Me 3 has made approximately $50 million less than its predecessor at this point in both their theatrical runs. To make matters worse, Despicable Me 3 dropped by over 50% in its second, pointing towards a theatrical run with shorter legs than its predecessors.
That begs the question, are moviegoers finally succumbing to Minions fatigue? Or did the film just leave a little to be desired? We may not know that answer until another film in the franchise is released.
#1: Spider-Man: Homecoming – $117 Million
The rich get even richer.
The second of three MCU films to be released this year continues the impressive stretch of superhero movies this year both critically and financially which includes The Lego Batman Movie, Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Wonder Woman.
Many wondered how this latest version of Spider-Man was going to perform, considering how many have grown tired of the character constantly getting rebooted. However, it’s $117 million opening proves that people will still come to the theater for a well crafted superhero film.
Homecoming grossed $257 million worldwide and still has to open in 40% of overseas markets. Although it appears that Spider-Man won’t be the highest grossing superhero movie of the year, it’s certainly going to make a pretty penny for Marvel.
