While it didn’t exactly light the world on fire with critics, The Nun proved that the Conjuring Universe — or ‘CU’ for short (did I just coin a term?) — is still immensely popular with horror fans, amassing over $53 million in its domestic premiere at the box office over the weekend (and over $133 million worldwide). In fact, both its domestic and global grosses are good for franchise highs among all five Conjuring films in their opening weekends. At this point, Warner Bros. is basically printing money.
But while all of these films have been box office successes, they’re all certainly not of the same artistic quality. I’m especially looking at you, Annabelle! WB hasn’t exactly cracked the code yet in that respect, but at least they’re turning into marketing whizzes when it comes to their horror films. They won’t stop making them anytime soon, so maybe they’ll hit their stride when The Crooked Man hits theaters sometime in the near future.
