December has become a hodge podge for the film industry. It’s where indie darlings begin there ascent into the mind of the academy, and where mega blockbusters make a ton of money. There’s a lot to navigate in the last month of the year, making for a fun (and crowded) December 2017 movie preview.
December 1st
Ohh hai, Mark!
The Disaster Artist opens in New York and LA in the first weekend of the month and then will expand into a wide release by the end of the year. The movie of the making of The Room is shockingly generating some Oscar buzz, most notably for James Franco’s performance as Tommy Wiseau.
As for alternative features, Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel may appeal to those looking for a warm blanket of a film that they can soon forget afterwards. But, the other main player in the first weekend of the December 2017 movie preview has to be Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water. The film centers around the growing relationship between a mute woman and a sea monster as they attempt to evade a government worker (Michael Shannon) during the Cold War. The film sounds nuts, but you count on me checking it out as soon as possible.

December 8th
With a bunch of movies rolling into wide release in the second weekend of December, the weekend is a bit quiet from a quantity perspective. But, any cinephile should seek out I, Tonya as it releases in limited theaters. Margot Robbie stars as Tonya Harding, the infamous figure skater better known for her hostile takedown of Nancy Kerrigan. The film is told from her perspective and is said to almost feel like Goodfellas in nature.
According to many pundits, Margot Robbie is the frontrunner for the Best Actress award, making the film almost a required viewing.

This film is a little bit of a deep cut, but an indie film by the name of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will fly into theaters on the third weekend of this December 2017 movie preview. Let’s be honest, you’ve had this date circled since 2015 when The Force Awakens premiered.
In other news, The classic story of Ferdinand will also hit theaters in an attempt to earn traffic by classic counterprogramming. The animated film stars John Cena as the title character so that’s…something.

December 20th
December 20th only has two new films getting released in The Greatest Showman and Jumanji. The former appears to be trying to ride off of La La Land‘s praise from a year ago, using the same lyricists to create catchy songs around the story of P.T. Barnum and the creation of his circus. Hugh Jackman plays Barnum, showing that he still has that beautiful singing voice that made him so popular on Broadway.
Unless all the jokes were spoiled in the trailer, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle looks to be a fun update to the classic Robin Williams’ film. The Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black seemed to have a lot of fun acting differently from their usual shtick as they’re avatars of high-schoolers playing a video game version of the game come to life. I’m unsure on this one, but it could make a ton of money if reviews are fairly positive.
December 22nd
A lot of smaller, intriguing projects are due to hit theaters in the fourth weekend of the month, making for a fascinating finish to the December 2017 movie preview. Large audiences may see comedies like Pitch Perfect 3 or Father Figures, but everyone should keep an eye out for Downsizing to watch Matt Damon learn to cope with shrinking down to the size of a thumb tack.
As for the more Oscar-inclined, Steven Spielberg’s The Post will undoubtedly get looked at by the Academy. Starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, the film covers The Washington Post’s attempt to uncover years of government cover-ups. The trio moved around countless other projects in order to make the film.

December 25th
Christmas day sees only two new films coming to theaters in preparation for the Oscar race. Molly’s Game is the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin, one of Hollywood’s best writers. Starring Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba, the film tells the story of Molly Bloom, an ex-skier turned owner of one of the highest stake poker rings ever conceived.
But, MovieBabble’s choice for the weekend (and quite possibly of the entire December 2017 movie preview) is Phantom Thread, Daniel Day-Lewis’ last performance before his self-imposed retirement. The film centers around a fashion designer that seems to have a very dark secret. The film sees the reunion of Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson who worked together on the modern classic There Will Be Blood. Honestly, this movie could have been about anything and I still would have been excited to see it.
