Worst Movies of December 2016

Now that I’ve discussed the best movies of December (which you can view here), it’s time to look at the stinkers that came out last month, and man were there some smelly ones out there to choose from.  Like the best movies of December, this list will cover the worst four movies of the month.  Be sure to comment at the bottom of the page with your thoughts.  There’s no need to worry about spoilers, because this article is spoiler free.  Some of these movies aren’t necessarily terrible, but December is filled with so many movies geared for Oscar season that these movies pale in comparison.  Here are the worst movies of December:

#4: Why Him?: This movie is by no means terrible (there is certainly some really good laughs to be had), but the film goes too long between jokes at times, leaving you completely bored with its tired, cliched plot.  The movie depends completely on how much you like James Franco, which isn’t the most ringing endorsement to give a movie.

Some of the characters, including Bryan Cranston’s son, are so annoying in the movie that you would love if they would just stop talking and go away.  Keegan-Michael Key steals the show, the issue is that he doesn’t get enough screen time to make up for the characters that try way too hard to get a laugh from the audience.

#3: Office Christmas Party: This movie gets worse the more I think about it.  I originally gave this movie a fresh review (a fresh review for my standards is a C+ or higher), but I would most certainly grade it worse if I had that opportunity.  The actual office Christmas party within the movie itself has some funny moments, but the rest of the plot (especially the ending) is absolutely absurd and makes the movie lose all credibility in my mind.  It forces you to suspend belief to an extraordinarily high degree.  There’s also one of the most forced romances (between Jason Bateman and Olivia Munn) that I’ve seen this year.  This is a classic case of a movie trying to do way too much with its plot instead of knowing what it is and sticking to it.

#2: Assassin’s Creed: I, like most people, had very high hopes for this movie as the saving grace for video games, but it turned out to be one of the most disappointing video game adaptations to date.  Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons, try their best, but it’s not enough to overcome a severely flawed plot that doesn’t spend nearly enough time in past (which is what makes the video game so great).  Assassin’s Creed is a loud movie that hardly makes sense the more you think about it.  The movie also has a laughably terrible scene with Fassbender singing about how crazy he’s become.  It has an ending that shamelessly calls for a sequel that, judging by the box office, will absolutely not happen.

#1: Collateral Beauty: Like I said in my full review, I’ve never seen a movie try to so hard to tug at your heartstrings but be so inherently mean.  While Will Smith is grieving for the loss of his daughter (his performance is the only redeemable thing in this movie), his three “friends” attempt to prove to the executive board of the company that they all work for that he’s insane so that they can take Will Smith’s character’s shares of the company and make money.

In the most Oscar-baity movie of the year, each character has a super underdeveloped, sappy backstory that does its best to fish for tears from the audience that do not pay off whatsoever.  The film also ends with a logic-defying twist that is just laughably bad.  Collateral Beauty may not only be the worst movie of December, but it’s in serious contention for the worst movie of 2016.
