Top 10 Films You May Not Know Are Coming in 2019

by Cammy Madden
2019

We may only be in the first quarter of 2018 but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about 2019. With big films such as Avengers 4 and Star Wars: Episode IX hogging all the spotlight, here are my top 10 films you may not know are coming out in 2019!

Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel (July 5th)

2019

The Sony/Marvel introduction of Spider-Man into the MCU in 2017 was without a doubt a success, so it’s really no surprise that the web-slinger’s sequel would be hitting cinemas ASAP. It already has a release date of July 5th. Pretty much all we know is that the sequel will begin mere moments after the events of Avengers 4. We can imagine that the ordeal will pack quite a punch against the young Avenger. As such, it will allow the sequel to focus on the neighborhood Spider-Man we all loved in the first film. I’m picturing a recovery similar to that of Tony Stark’s anxiety attacks in Iron Man 3.

As of yet, details are scarce (obviously) and the villain of the film is one of the details still unknown. My bet would be against seeing Doc Ock or Green Goblin anytime soon. We certainly won’t be getting another Electro story either! We can also rule Venom out due to his own film appearing later this year. My guess is that Michael Mando will return to play Scorpion.

Artemis Fowl (August 9th)

2019

If you’re unfamiliar with the name, Artemis Fowl is the main character of a book series written by Eoin Colfer. It follows the story of a 12-year old genius who not only discovers fairies but manages to outsmart them and steal their gold. As a child, I personally enjoyed seeing the main character as a villain. In 2019 we will see this adaptation making its way to the big screen. Following on from successful book to film adaptations such as Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Maze Runner and all the rest, we can only wait and see how this one turns out.

It seems that the film itself will be covering the first two books in some form or another. If history is anything to go by, this could be a challenge. Only back in 2009 did Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant plague our screens. This book to film adaptation attempted to cover 3+ books in one film and ultimately it failed miserably (in my opinion as a fan of the books). We can only hope that Artemis Fowl does not suffer the same fate.

Silver Surfer: Prodigal Son (December 12th)

2019

Having experienced two separate Fantastic 4 teams, it seems that Fox is planning to ditch the group for this film. Instead, all of the focus will be on the Silver Surfer. The last time we saw this metallic villain/hero was in Rise of the Silver Surfer. It seems that the bar for this character is set pretty low as far as live action films are concerned. This film will tell the origin story of Norrin Radd as he flies around the universe to find planets for Galactus to feed on.

Interestingly, this won’t be the only Fantastic 4-based character to be receiving a solo film. It turns out that Noah Hawley is involved in creating a story based around Doctor Doom. Similarly to the Prodigal Son movie, details are scarce but ditching the Fantastic 4 for these films could prove to be a wise move!

Glass (January 18th)

2019

By 2019 it will be almost two decades since M. Night Shyamalan’s dark twist on the superhero genre: Unbreakable. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson bumped heads as nemesis to one another. By the end of Unbreakable, David Dunn and “Mr Glass” appeared to have ended their story. That was until Split in 2016 when James McAvoy shocked audiences by playing Kevin…who was one of 23 distinct personalities inside one host body. Many were unaware that these films even existed within the same world up until the final few moments of the film.

With all three stars returning in Glass, we will watch as David Dunn attempts to track down the increasingly dangerous Kevin (not really a name that inspires fear). Set for a January release date, this is one film that warrants high expectations!

Detective Pikachu (May 10th)

2019

When you woke up this morning, I guarantee that you weren’t imagining Deadpool dressed up as Pikachu solving crimes, were you? Well, that’s not exactly what 2019 will be bringing our way but it is close enough. The film will be based on a Nintendo game by the same name. It follows a unique Pikachu who while not being as active, strong, fast or battle-oriented as his comrades, can speak and solve crimes. Ryan Reynolds will be providing the voice for this yellow, electric mouse Pokemon.

This will be the second franchise that Nintendo will have allowed to become a Hollywood live action movie. The first of these was Super Mario Bros. which by all accounts was a complete and utter disaster. Top that with the general lack of success of game to film adaptations and it’s really no surprise that Nintendo have been protective of their franchises. However, Detective Pikachu sounds like it is wacky enough to be a success!

Chaos Walking (March 1st)

2019

Another film on this list that comes from books, Chaos Walking follows the trend of teenagers/young adults within dystopian futures. The film takes place in a world where no women exist due to a virus. The same virus granted the remaining men an ability known as ‘Noise’. This allows them to read the minds of all living creatures through a stream of words, pictures and sounds.

I think we’re all a little worn out by dystopian futures but with an interesting premise and no mention of overthrowing an oppressive government, this could be a movie to watch out for. Not to mention the rather star-studded cast of Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen and David Oyelowo.

The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle (April 12th)

2019

It’s been two decades since Eddie Murphy took on the role of the timeless character: Doctor Doolittle. With several, gradually worsening sequels, it’s high time the film got a reboot. Before Tony Stark continues his battle with Thanos, Robert Downey Jr. will be busy talking to animals. As it stands we know nothing about the plot of the movie but with “voyage” in the title, I’m sure we could all takes some wild guesses.

Appearing alongside Robert Downey Jr. will be fellow avenger Tom Holland (who appears to be making a name for himself in 2019). The cast will also include Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen and Jim Broadbent.

Men in Black Spinoff (May 17th)

2019

Very little is known about this film other than it’s a Men in Black spin-off. Some details suggest it will be a complete re-imagining of the film franchise while others hint at more of a soft reboot. What we do know for certain is that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will not be reprising their roles as K and J. Recent reports have Chris Hemsworth as the most likely character for the lead male role.

I for one still hold onto hope for the 21 Jump Street and Men in Black crossover movie that was first mentioned after the release of 22 Jump Street. Hope may be fading but if this Men in Black reboot is a success then maybe we’ll see Chris Hemsworth joining up with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum on an undercover alien mission!

1984 (TBA)

2019

George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel is currently undergoing a rewrite of sorts to make it ready for the big screen. With movie adaptations of this dark story having failed to become greats, the 2019 will have to be truly amazing to sway fans of the novel. Book sales have spiked in recent years which perhaps spurred this adaptation. We know very little about the film itself other than it’s undergoing a rewrite at the hands of Paul Greengrass and James Graham. I guess we’ll just have to wait until 2019 to see how close to the original this films sticks. With political tensions constantly in flux, it wouldn’t surprise me if recent events find their way into the film in some form or another.

Call of the Wild (December 25th)

2019

Our final mention on this list is yet another book to movie adaptation. All we know about this movie so far is that Chris Sanders will be directing. The story is a famous one that has been made into a movie several times before (1935 and 1992 at least). It tells the tale of Jack Thornton and his wolf-hybrid sled dog: Buck. The original story was written by Jack London (famous for his Alaskan adventures with wolves) but it’s unclear how true to the original story this movie adaptations will be. Part of the never-ending battle that every adaptation faces. Having read the book as a child and being a fan of White Fang (another film based on a Jack London novel), I can only hope this film does the book justice.

I am just not sure about Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. I love him as Deadpool but I’m not sure. I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
Chaos Walking sounds like the book The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison. Sounds interesting still.

I’m a little concerned as well. I mean I think it will be entertaining but having grown up with Pokemon, it might come across as a little disturbing to hear Deadpool essentially voicing Pikachu. Hopefully it works and is entertaining though.

Me too! I am also a little concerned because well, Pikachu doesn’t talk much from what I remember. I wonder how they are going to get around this.

Apparently there is actually a Detective Pikachu game and the Pikachu in that doesn’t really fight but can speak. I guess sort of similar to Meowth from Team Rocket. It’s certainly going to be bizarre seeing Pikachu with a voice though!
